Wizarding World Chocolate Trifle

Wizarding World Chocolate Trifle is inspired by a dessert from the menu at Universal Studios in the Three Broomsticks restaurant. It is an individual dessert composed of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache, strawberries, strawberry jam, whipped cream, and a chocolate decoration. My son ordered this on our last visit to the park and let us all have a taste. We all agreed it was delicious and definitely worth replicating at home. I use an assembly line approach to pulling this dessert together. I lay out all the ingredients in the order I will need them, then I start moving through the line.

  • First, I put the slices of strawberries on the sides of the dessert bowl.
  • Then I spoon the chocolate mousse into the bowl, just up to the top of the strawberries.
  • Next I spoon the strawberry jam on top of the mousse.
  • This is followed by the crumbled cake.
  • Next is the chocolate ganache.
  • Finally come the trimmings. I sprinkle the mini chocolate chips, or you could place shaved chocolate on top as they do in the park. The chocolate chips easier and with all that goes into this dessert, any step that makes it a little faster is appreciated.
  • I pipe a dollop of whipped cream on top, place the chocolate decoration in the center and finally a single raspberry. All finished, and isn’t it pretty!

Yield: 4 servings

Wizarding World Chocolate Trifle

Wizarding World Chocolate Trifle
Traditional English Trifle with layers of strawberries, chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, strawberry jam, chocolate ganache and whipped cream.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup cold water

Chocolate Mousse

  • 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 7 oz. jar marshmallow cream
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped

Chocolate Ganache

  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract

Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Chocolate Trifle

  • 4 strawberries
  • 4 raspberries
  • 1 cup strawberry jam
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

Chocolate Cake

  1. Heat oven to 325°F. Spray 8 inch square baking pan with cooking spray.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
  3. In a separate small bowl, combine the melted butter, vanilla, vinegar and water.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
  5. Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake 40-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely.

Chocolate Ganache

  1. Heat heavy whipping cream in a heavy saucepan over medium heat until hot (do not boil). Remove from heat, add chocolate and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla.
  2. Cool completely.

Chocolate Mousse

  1. Whip the cream n a stand mixer until stiff.
  2. In a large microwaveable bowl, microwave the chocolate at 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir, Repeat until melted and smooth. Be careful not to burn.
  3. Add softened cream cheese and vanilla; mix with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended.
  4. Blend in marshmallow cream; fold in whipped cream.
  5. Pour into 1 quart serving bowl. Refrigerate for several hours.

Whipped Cream

  1. Whip the cream n a stand mixer until lightly stiff.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff.
  3. Place in refrigerator until ready to use.

Chocolate Decoration

  1. Melt chocolate melting wafers in a small bowl in the microwave at 50% power for 30 second intervals until melted and smooth. Be careful not to burn.
  2. Spoon chocolate into a piping bag fitted with a straight tip.
  3. Pipe the chocolate onto parchment paper. Start with a long thin loop, then circle back up in a shorter circle loop and finally at the bottom with a short oval loop.
  4. Let chocolate cool until firm.

Prepare to Assemble Trifle

  1. Cut strawberries into four slices, all in the same direction (not quartered).
  2. Warm strawberry jam in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Stir. It should be easy to spoon.
  3. Crumble the cake into small pieces using a fork.
  4. Put whipped cream into a piping bag.
  5. Wash four raspberries.

Assemble Chocolate Trifle

  1. Place one strawberry slice on each side of the dessert dish.
  2. Spoon the chocolate mousse into the dessert dish just to the top of the strawberry.
  3. Layer strawberry jam on top of the chocolate mousse.
  4. Layer the crumbled cake on top of the strawberry jam.
  5. Add a thin layer of chocolate ganache.
  6. Sprinkle mini chocolate chips or chocolate shavings on top.
  7. Pipe a dollop of freshly made whipped cream on top.
  8. Add one fresh raspberry and chocolate decoration, if desired.
