2017 D23 Announcements Summary
There were so many exciting announcements coming out of D23 this year. I have included a few of my favorites here.
Star Wars: Galaxy Edge – Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios
It was announced that the new Star Wars inspired land will be named Star Wars: Galaxy Edge. In addition, a model was shared at the 2017 D23 Expo with a lot more exciting details about what to expect when the new land opens in 2019. There will be two “E-ticket” attractions, one that will give guests the chance to fly the Millenium Falcon and the second will place us in a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. There will be character meet and greets, including BB-8, Chewbacca and others. Something I’m very excited about is the new cantina with will include blue milk and other Star Wars themed food I’m sure. Very exciting stuff!
There were a couple of new announcements for the Disneyland Resort, primarily for Disney’s California Adventure Park. Paradise Pier will be getting a new name and new look and feel by becoming the Pixar Pier in 2018. This will bring more Pixar characters and stories to the land. A limited time Pixar Fest coming to the Disneyland Resort. I’m excited to see this area get more of a Disney and Pixar feel!
And there were more hints dropped that an immersive Super Hero experience is coming to Disney’s California Adventure park. There are not a lot of details at this time, but it appears Spider Man and the Avengers will be joining the Guardians of the Galaxy at the park sometime in the future. I think this has the potential to be a lot of fun and a great addition to California Adventure, I can’t wait to hear more about what is coming.
Walt Disney World Resort
There were so many exciting announcements for the Walt Disney World Resort. There is a lot of change coming to Florida for sure.
One of the most exciting was for a new Star Wars Themed Resort which will be a completely immersive experience, as though you are actually living in the Star Wars universe.
At Epcot, there were a number of exciting announcements. A new space themed restaurant near Mission Space is coming. It will be as though you are actually in space. I cannot wait to see the menu for this new dining location.
In addition, two new attractions are coming to Epcot: a Ratatouille inspired ride, similar to one at Disneyland Paris in the France Pavilion and a new Guardians of the Galaxy inspired attraction that will be in Future World. Both look very fun and I will definitely be planning a trip out there when all these changes are complete.
The Magic Kingdom also is getting a new attraction, a Tron inspired ride similar to the very popular attraction at Shanghai Disneyland. I’ve always wanted to step into the world of Tron and ride a light cycle.
The Magic Kingdom will also get a new theater inspired by a theater in Kansas City. Walt lived in Kansas City after he moved from Marceline. It’s wonderful to have continued connections to Walt and his history in the parks.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
The Great Movie Ride will be closing to make way for a Mickey Mouse theme ride called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I like that there are more additions of Disney animation and the focus on trains, which was one of Walt’s favorite hobbies.
New resort transportation options are coming as well. The most exciting is the Disney Skyliner, which reminds me of the Skyway at Disneyland. I recall the Skyway from my youth and am excited to have a chance to ride something like it again. A second new transportation offering are the Minnie Mouse themed vehicles guests can schedule to make their way around the resort.
Disney Cruise Line
And the last announcement I’m sharing here, although I know there were even more, is that the Disney Cruise Line has added another ship to the schedule, up to three from the previously announced two new ships being built. This is great news as we absolutely LOVED our Disney Cruise and more ships will mean more options for all of us!
Exiting changes are coming!
